AmeriCorps Week round up

Last week was AmeriCorps week; a week when AmeriCorps members, alums and volunteers follow the AmeriCorps motto, and get things done!

Met Council's AmeriCorps volunteers participated in the kick off celebration last weekend at Thomas Jefferson Park in Harlem. 1,300 other members, alums and volunteers showed up to rally around the importance of service and all the volunteers worked on various projects based on helping New York go green. Trees were planted, trash was picked up, kids were taught; it was a sucessful day.

Met Council VISTAs and volunteers got involved the rest of the week by planting a new garden at our Carlton Ave. housing site in Brooklyn, and passing out hundreds of energy efficient CF bulbs at 3 of our East Side housing sites.

Walking Buddies Needed

Help guide Met Council clients as they participate in a historic walking tour of the Grand Central Station Area. There will be a professional tour guide leading the group, but we are seeking two volunteers to help provide assistance to our seniors should they need it. This is a great program for anyone that wants to learn about the Grand Central Station Area as well as spend an engaging afternoon with seniors. The group will be meeting at the Clock at 11:30am on Sunday, May 17th.

Where: The Clock, Grand Central Station
When: Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Time: 11:30am to 1:00pm

If you are interested in being a walking buddy, please contact Jillian at 212-453-9675 or jconstantine@metcouncil.org.

Butterfield 8

Our fundraising event at Butterfield 8 last night was a great success, and fun too! 92 people were in attendance, and although the numbers have not come in yet with how much money we raised for our new Food for Life campaign, I can say that we made a lot of new friends who think we do good work, and that is just as important!
Thank you for coming!

Painting the Town

This past weekend we had two awesome groups of volunteers painting at two different Met Council sites. A group from Goldman Sachs hiked over to 80 Maiden Lane to give our Career Services conference room on the 22nd floor a much needed new coat. At Metro House, the UJA Young Professional group spent the day sprousing up the wallways for the residents.
