A Year After Sandy

On October 29, 2012, residents of Met Council's low-income senior housing in Sea Gate, Brooklyn - just a few blocks from the beach - evacuated their homes as Hurricane Sandy arrived. It was over two months by the time all the residents had returned, and repairs are still ongoing.

Yesterday, volunteers from investorsBank joined our Sea Gate clients to mark the one-year anniversary in a unique way. To celebrate how far they've come in the past year, residents and volunteers threw a lively luau dance party.

Clients, volunteers & staff joined in a lively conga line
The party gave everyone a much-needed dose of positive energy, and clients, staff, and volunteers alike had lots of fun. Our thanks to investorsBank for making this important event possible!

October Volunteer of the Month - Kimberly Mobley

October Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Kimberly Mobley, our Volunteer of the Month for October 2013!

Kimberly has been very involved with Career Services' “All About Jobs” program. The program is designed for young adults to improve their job skills. Participating students receive computer training courses, career training, and an internship placement at Met Council. Kimberly was essential in elevating this program to new heights with her great work with the computer training classes.

Her involvement began early on, where she spearheaded the development of both the Microsoft Word and PowerPoint courses’ curriculums. Not only did she help develop these course materials, but she also led and taught four of the twelve training sessions! Her contributions and teachings to these students have enabled them to greatly improve their computer skills.

Thank you Kimberly once again for all of your great work with Met Council and congratulations!

Appreciation and AmeriCorps' 20th Anniversary!

Congratulations to AmeriCorps! 20 years later, they are proud of their 800,000 members and alumni clocking in over 1 BILLION service hours! Thomas Enrich, a former chairman of the Corporation for National and Community Service contributed this great article about AmeriCorps to Forbes to commemorate this occasion.

Here at Met Council, we are fortunate to host 4 AmeriCorps members each year who help us coordinate hundreds of volunteers and thousands of service hours in NYC. Our volunteer programs wouldn't be possible without them. This year, our AmeriCorps members are Tiffany Doris, Jared Kunze, Anna McKinnon, and Abby Petterchak. Thank you for all the work you have done and will continue to do for the thousands of clients your programs benefit!
