Volunteer Recognition, 2009
On Tuesday, 40 volunteers and their families joined Met Council staff to celebrate their achievements from the past year. Five volunteers were presented with awards for their outstanding commitment to fighting poverty, and two more were given the President's Volunteer Service Awards for the amount of hours that they had spent working at Met Council. In total our volunteers clocked in over 3,000 hours of volunteer service in the past year. Congratulations to everyone! You have done an amazing job and we sincerely appreciate your efforts.

Check out Facebook's birthday causes. Instead of getting stuff for your birthday, because you live in a way small new york apartment which cannot fit one more inch of material, get your friends to donate to your chosen cause instead.
Time banking is all the rage! Ok, perhaps its not, but maybe it could be. Time banking works when a bunch of people who have skills (anything from painting and baking to accounting) want to share their skills in exchange for the skills of other people. So if you are super good at making cakes, but need help driving your mom to her doctor's appointment, then you could trade cake making for car rides. awesome!

Holocaust Survivors Share
Yesterday 25 students from PS 149 in Brooklyn trekked out to the JCC of Canarsie to listen to 4 survivors of concentration camps and Nazi occupation tell their histories. Their teacher, Sebastian Turner, had been teaching about genocide and WW II when he met Met Council staff at a recent event. From that meeting a plan was formed to give his students a first hand account of what they were learning in class. The survivors spoke honestly about their experiences, and urged the students to study hard and make the most of their lives, especially considering those in the Holocaust who never had the same opportunities.

Some of us living in New York are lucky enough to have garden space, and perhaps with so much rain this season you are looking at a bumper crop of zucchini. Consider donating your excess vegetables to food pantries who have trouble getting fresh produce to feed their clients. Learn more about this project at AmpleHarvest.
Mother Jones, Campus Progress, and WireTap have proclaimed their first annual Hellraisers awards. Are you a graphic designer with altruistic tendencies? cause/affect is a biennial graphic design competition which celebrates the work of designers and organizations who set out to positively impact our society. All work entered in the competition must promote or support social good and actively engage in enriching our lives. All we ask is that it doesn’t contribute directly to the profit of a commercial organization. This is a competition for do-gooders, who do good work. And it is open to all.
