On Monday, September 15th, Met Council participated in the nation wide Fighting Poverty with Faith: Week of Action. This was a project co-sponsored by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and Catholic Charities. People of all faiths were asked to participate in fighting poverty by asking their local, state, and national candidates what they plan on doing in their first 100 days of office to combat poverty.
Met Council hosted an “Email Campaign” in which volunteers joined us in our main office to write emails to local elected officials. As this election season progresses and funding for social service agencies dwindles it has become imperative that the public takes a more aggressive role in asking officials what they plan to do to alleviate poverty in their communities. Volunteers were able to send emails imploring elected officials to support the poor and near-poor throughout New York City. We were also grateful to have had Diane J. Barrett, Chief of Staff for Assemblyman Rory Lancman of Queens here to speak to our volunteers about what Assemblyman Lancman has done to help the people of Queens battling poverty. She spoke on how Assemblyman Lancman has made it a priority to seek and provide funding for food pantries throughout Queens. Many thanks to the wonderful Met Council Volunteers that participated in the event and a special thank you to Diane J. Barrett for coming to speak!
