On February 13, 2013, Met Council partnered with 240 students from Abraham Joshua Heschel School to help hundreds of families and their communities after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.  Dedicated volunteers cleaned up storm debris, prepared a new warehouse for item storage, assisted low-income senior housing residents with daily tasks including laundry, and conducted critical needs assessments.

These phenomenal volunteer efforts took place simultaneously in Coney Island, Manhattan, and Brighton Beach. Brooklyn-based senior citizen housing residents were especially grateful for the numerous helping hands after their homes were severely hit by the storm. They have since been unable to tackle housekeeping tasks to get their lives back on track.

Students, in collaboration with the Shorefront Y, also went door-to-door to assess the immediate needs of those living in Brighton Beach. Many residents are living in difficult circumstances and are in need of food, financial assistance, home repairs, and mold remediation.
